The theme of today’s readings is discipleship and how, when a person accepts the challenge to be a disciple, change occurs in that person’s life. Whether we consider Elisha in the first reading or the three persons in the gospel who were invited to follow Jesus, one thing is common to all. Their lives changed remarkably when they agreed to take up the role of a disciple. Elisha lift the life of a farmer to dedicate his life to God and carry on the role first given to the prophet Elijah. He left his plough and his family to wander from place to place, proclaiming the word of God. In the gospel we meet three different persons who encounter Jesus and know themselves to be called to follow him. Jesus, encourages some and speaks discouraging words to others. But in every case he points to the essence of being  a disciple: keeping your eyes focused on the goal of proclaiming the reign of God. The call to discipleship continues today, a call directed to all Christians who, by their baptism, are bound to proclaim God’s presence in their lives. In the Eucharist we are reminded to this vocation and fed with the bread of life which strengthens us to be the hands, the feet, the eyes and the mouth of God by the way we love our neighbour. This is the essence of Christian discipleship.

Sunday Smile -
A small boy was part of his aunt’s wedding party. As he came down the aisle, he would take two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd and roar. So it went: step, step, ROAR, step, step, ROAR all the way down the aisle (to the great amusement of the guests!) Asked later what he was doing, the lad explained: "I was just being the Ring Bear...."

See you in the fall  !

We pray in solidarity with our diocesan mission team working in Brazil; for our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Maceió devastated by a massive flood that has killed hundreds and left over 70,000 people homeless.

We pray to the Lord.
